I am extremely fortunate to have worked as a ‘Play Coach’ at Clairvaux Catholic Primary School, Christian College (Surf Coast) and St. Therese Catholic School in the Geelong and Surf Coast regions.
As a Play Coach, my role is to facilitate and participate in a range of fun activities that are child-led with a dash of my own influence.
This service is arranged through an NDIS Key Worker and Therapy Team in conjunction with the School.
Many Neurodiverse children have challenges in the playground with social skills, fair play, respect for themselves and others, winning and losing and setting healthy boundaries.
I am essentially there to listen, engage and support the young person during their recess/lunch activities.
I have been working in this role for two years and have been simply amazed at the individual growth in self-confidence and self-esteem in these kids.
If there is one thing I love in life it’s COFFEE!
Forget about all of the fancy activities or places, for some teens it’s simply about enjoying a hot cuppa and letting the conversation flow.
There is so much going on for this generation of teenagers with social media, friends, parties, peer group pressures the list could go on for miles.. it can be challenging to stay grounded.
I find that sometimes it’s about the simplicity and escape of a hot beverage and spilling your beans in a purely non-judgmental, trusting, safe space for 60 minutes.
It’s amazing what some perspective and gentle encouragement can do, when the world seems so overwhelming at times.
